If there’s one thing almost every American can agree on, it’s that we love to eat! From New York City’s famous bagels to California’s fresh, healthy cuisine (and so much in between), food is an important part of our rich cultural heritage. When it comes to finding inspiration and recipes, Pinterest is the place to go. Food is the largest category on the platform with more than 15 billion pins and its rich data offers a bounty of insights into what foods consumers crave across the country.

Food & Beverage Trends in the Northeast

We always knew Northeasterners could be sweet (but we’re partial): Searches for sweet treats were up 27% in the region in 2016—Connecticut craved cannoli, Maine went donut crazy, and flower cupcake tutorials ruled Rhode Island. Cocktails were also on the menu, as Pennsylvanians were sipping peach schnapps, sangria was served in New Jersey, and martinis were shaken (not stirred) in New Hampshire. There were healthy options too, Vermonters got back to their roots with beets and New Yorkers fell for falafel.

Indulgent Southern Treats

Y’all know Southerners love to indulge. Searches for indulgent foods were up 20% in the south. Regional foods factored heavily into the area’s favorites: shrimp pasta in Louisiana, peanut butter fudge in Kentucky, corn bread in Tennessee, and red velvet cake in South Carolina.

Midwestern Comfort Food

Midwesterners are known for their warmth and hospitality, so it makes sense that searches for comfort food jumped 58%. Nebraskans looked for sloppy Joes, tater tots trended in South Dakota, and cheesy chicken enchiladas were cooking in Kansas kitchens.

Spicy Southwestern Dishes

Southwesterners were inspired by their neighbors to the south! In New Mexico, searches for empanada recipes were up 40%, cooks in Arizona learned how to spice up their recipes with chile peppers, Coloradans enjoyed carnitas, and Texans got creative with stuffed avocados.

West Coast Healthy Treats

Searches by Americans living in the West prove they are committed to a healthy lifestyle, with a 79% increase in searches for healthy treats last year. Californians munch on figs, and Wyoming nibbles on energy bites. Washington and Oregon look to Asia for inspiration, with searches for Thai chicken and curry trending in each state respectively.

Finally, it’s no surprise that in Alaska the most-searched recipe was “survival bread,” which only requires flour and water and can be cooked on an open fire.
