At Women’s Marketing, we’re passionate about growing brands. It’s who we are and what we do. As individuals, we also bring a unique set of talents and perspectives that influence how we creatively approach our work. In addition to working on our SEO team as a Senior Strategist, Jean Bedrosian is also a talented artist whose work was recently selected to be part of the AD ART SHOW at Sotheby’s in New York City. Here, Jean shares her approach to art and how her analytic work at Women’s Marketing is balanced by her creative endeavors.

When did you discover your passion for art?

Jean: From an early age (around 5), I was exposed to artwork by my mother, who brought me to art museums. She taught me how to identify the style of an artist, such as Monet or Cézanne. This stuck with me. So, when I went to college, I declared my major as Studio Art right away. College was the impetus for me to fully realize that I could create art that reflects who I am and what I think and feel. From then on, it has never stopped being a part of my life in many different forms.

How would you describe your work?

Jean: I am an abstract expressionist. This means that my work is not literally representational of the natural world around us. However, it is still somewhat connected to what we see around us in that it abstracts the natural world. This allows space for the viewer to add in their own ideas and feelings. This is the power of abstract art that most people don’t understand. It expresses the artist’s internal life, while also prompting the viewer to think and feel more deeply in response to the work. My most recent work is a reflection of my faith, combined with a love of nature. I’m especially in love with water, clouds and skyscapes!

How does your art inspire your creativity at work?

Jean: My fine art work helps me to be a creative thinker at work. I can definitely “think outside the box”! Also, my background in graphic design helps me with client presentations, too.

Tell us more about the Ad Art Show at Sotheby’s? What was the selection process like? What other shows have you participated in?

Jean: The AD ART SHOW is an inaugural initiative by an organization called MvVO ART. Their goal for this show was to showcase professionals in advertising and marketing who do fine art on the side, outside of work. There is a great tradition of this in the art world, most notably by Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keeffe, Keith Haring, James Rosenquist, and many others. They all successfully transitioned from “commercial art” and advertising to fine arts.

The show represents artists who were selected by a jury. The stellar jury included a senior vice president of contemporary art at Sotheby’s (who is also a former Director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh), a curator from the New Museum, the director of Socrates Sculpture Park, as well as other curators, gallery owners, and art specialists. Each artist submitted images of their work along with a written description. The jurors select the work to be in the show. In all, there were 90+ artists and over 180 works in the show. It took two full floors at Sotheby’s!

This is the first, professional art show in which I have participated. Other shows were most informal and took place in university galleries, libraries, and schools.

What’s next?

Jean: I am going to keep painting in my free time and enter more art shows and fairs! Also, I love the dichotomy between my technical, analytic SEO work during the day, and my expressive, free flowing artwork at night and weekends. I guess I’m a left brain and right brain person.
