The athleisure movement got women to trade in their heels for a pair of comfy sneakers—and they aren’t about to give them up. Now that sneakers are a wardrobe staple around the globe, accounting for 25% of shoes now online and 15% of women’s footwear overall, analysts predict that we’ll continue to see growth in this segment.
Nike is the most-stocked footwear brand worldwide, followed by Puma; in the U.S., the top most-stocked footwear brands are all athletic labels, including Adidas, New Balance, Asics, Under Armour, and Skechers. At retail, sneakers currently make up about half of all footwear styles at Macy’s and a third of shoe offerings at Zappos. And these athletic shoes are more style than substance—the hottest trends include retro and classic styles, thick-soled “flatform” soles, slip-on sneakers in eye-catching prints, and shiny metallic accents.
An extension of the luxe boho fashion trend, shoes and boots in lush velvet have been arriving in stores this month. Retail analysts found that more than 3,000 pairs of velvet shoes arrived online in August-September, that’s an 81% increase over the prior year, with most styles in the premium and luxury markets.
From strappy sandals to sneakers, shiny shoes in silver, gold, and copper have been selling well for more than a year and show no sign of slowing.

Ankle boots and booties have been on-trend for the past few seasons, but this year’s styles include contrasting wooden, metallic, or printed heels.

Thigh high boots may take a while to catch on at mass, but both editors and influencers are embracing this runway inspired trend.
